First off, I do this as a hobby, not for a living. I spend a lot of hours refurbishing one of these marvelous amps. It's a source of enjoyment and pride for me, so each amp is my best work, NOT my fastest 'gotta earn a living' work, as others may need to do. I am known as Scottrt on AudioKarma's 'Exclusively Sansui' forum. I do these detailed restorations on classic Sansui components of all types, and every now and then I enjoy to restore one for public sale (vs private commissions). Feel free to contact me if you have an amp of your own that you would like to see this type of work done. This AU-717 has been completely dis-assembled and thoroughly cleaned... frame/transformers/chassis/cct. boards/case cover/face and knobs...complete, inside and out. Then I completely restored its' electronics. Please bear in mind that most of these parts are replaced to reset the clock on sound quality and reliability. If you own or consider purchasing a nice used UN-restored 30 year old Sansui amp, it WILL need refurbishing very soon, or maybe already has problems mentioned in the listing. My restorations are truly complete. ALL electrolytic capacitors, standard diodes, zener diodes, silicon ball diodes, fuse resistors, many regular resistors, nearly all the small, medium and large transistors, trimmer pots, and finally any other component affected by the Sansui glue have been replaced. The four main filter caps are the originals, in excellent condition. I also renewed and up-rated the 4 power supply output transistors and driver pre-transistors with much higher rated Fairchild transistors. I replace many transistors with modern audio high quality higher voltage/power and lower distortion equivalents to ensure best reliability AND improve sound quality and detail. NO other 'restored' units on ebay are done at this extreme level. Only top of the line have been used: Nichicon PW and FG Fine Gold Muse electrolytic caps, Fairchild diodes and transistors, Bourns ceramic trim pots, etc. These parts cost two or three times as much as good quality 'general purpose' parts that other Sellers use. The original Sanken 2SA747 and 2SC1116 output transistors are intact and tested great. This amp has great cosmetics inside and out, 8.5 - 9 out of 10. The knobs have no cosmetic flaws, and the face is near perfect... their are a few small nick on the upper edge that I have touched-up. The original case cover is also very nice... no dents or dings and only a few various light scratches, but it presents nicely. (See detailed shots of this unit at link below). This is really as nice looking unit. All the controls (pots and switches) have of course been cleaned with DeOxit D5 and preserved with De-Oxit G5. Input jacks have been thoroughly cleaned. The amp was 'dialed in', then run pretty hard into load resistors for over 40 hours. Then I give it good listen, having given it enough time for the new caps to 'form'. This amp sounds really great... Powerful and detailed and just warm enough you can listen all day. This amp sounds much more robust and is more powerful than an un-restored one. The DC offset is zeroed out and Bias set at 20mv as per Sansui specs. Please see 54 hi-res pics hosted at photobucket using this link: Detailed restoration pics I will Include a CD with Hi-res pics of the restoration, along with a copy of my worksheets detailing the specifics of all the components replaced. I also include a copy of the receipts for all the components. The last four AU-717's I restored and listed on ebay each sold within 36 hours. Besides the kind ebay feedback, I also receive feedback from buyers via email, such as: "Scott, Au717 arrived promptly at 9am Saturday morning. IMPRESSED!!! such attention to detail, from workmanship to documentation. Only a true audio lover and craftsman could produce such results. Amp is tight and like being united with and old friend all the original and familiar qualities are shining through. SOUNDS GREAT!!! Thank you so much. I also have a pioneer RT909 Reel to Reel that's in need of some repair. Let me know if this is something you do. Again thanks you are AWESOME. Abe I." ______________________ "Hi You don't know me but my name is Bill and I have an AU-919 you restored. I bought it on ebay last week and have been playing it for the last few days. I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you how happy I am to have been able to get your unit. The seller included pictures you took during the rebuild and on their merit, I decided this was a must have. I was not wrong. It is "fast and detailed." I don't know how you learn the skills it took do do this but I'm very please you have. Anyway, I tip my hat to you. Regards/Bill" _______________________ Hey Scott Well, I couldn't resist your restored AU-717 listed on eBay. I'm the person in TN that has your restored AU-919. It gets played daily and I still am just totally delighted with it. I have had a AU-717 for some time before I got the 919. It has had it's caps replaced and it is very nice but I will sell it now to make way for yours. I really trust your work and the fact you replaced many of the other components along with the caps. Your unit will go up to my office. Please be sure to insure the package and send me the tracking number so I can be home when it's delivered. Thanks in advance for your efforts to get the 717 packaged and in the mail. Regards Bill B.________________________ Scott, The AU-717 arrived safely today. Thank you for all your effort on this amplifier, I appreciate it. I had some time to listen to it and the only way I can describe the sound is... Wow! It sounds great and just as you described, it is dynamic and detailed. I have an old 717 that was not used much but never had anything replaced in it. I listened to the original then to yours - your 717 sounds fantastic. This has been the best audio purchase I have made. Thank you, Joe K. _______________________________ "Hi, Scott. Just a quick note to let you know that the Au-717 just arrived. Haven't fired it up yet, but she looks great! No sign of damage and like-new cosmetics. Thanks also for the parts list, etc. I'll give you a slightly fuller report when I've had a chance to listen a little. It's Christmas in June........ Finally got a chance to hook up the "new" amp. Sounds wonderful. Great job of restoration! Thanks. Tom" I will guarantee the amp for 30 days, but not if I deem you hurt it by shorting out your speaker wires or some other bad move. For those who are interested, here is a list of just what I replaced in this amp: Power supply board: -25 EL caps, 22 diodes, 4 zeners, 14 resistors, 7 protection circuit transistors and brand new protection relay. Also 4 new Fairchild power supply regulator transistors. This is EVERY diode, EL capacitor and most transistors .........77 components! Phono/EQ board: -12 caps, 4 silicon diodes, 4 fuse resistors, 12 transistors Tone Control amp: -18 caps, 2 silicon diodes, 4 fuse resistors, 8 transistors Driver Boards: -10 caps, 6 diodes, 4 zeners, 6 trimmer pots, 4 fuse resistors,8 small transistors, 8 large transistors, and 4 new Fairchild pre-driver transistors. The big caps were uprated from 470uf to 1000uf. ......50 components! That's over 200 new components, all higher quality than the 33 year old originals. I have nearly $400 invested in the original amp purchase, electrical components and parts, and supplies. You can only imagine what additional it would cost to pay somebody for labor (nearly 30 hours the way I fuss) on top of that. My BIN price is a great deal if a genuinely 'like new' AU-717 is what you seek. This item will be carefully packaged in a brand new HD electronics rated box! It means as much to me as it does to you. I will be shipping Fedex, but the UPS shipping calculator amount should be close enough, so please consider it valid. I will ship promptly and provide tracking numbers. Insurance IS included in the shipping cost. I WILL NOT SHIP OUTSIDE THE 50 States US!!!! Sorry
